What is Titanium Dioxide?

Titanium Dioxide, also known as Ti02 is a fine white powder obtained by transformation of mineral compounds extracted from rocks.

 Titanium Dioxide is used in a plethora of skincare products such as pressed powders, loose powders and sunscreens as a sun filter or whitening agent. It was originally produced to use a white pigment back in 1923.

Health Concerns

According to The International Agency for Research on Cancer, studies have shown an increase in lung cancers due to inhalation exposure in animals from Titanium Dioxide. 

Ti02 does not pose a threat to human health from skin exposure, however the concern for human health rises when titanium dioxide is inhaled or respirable. For Ti02 to be inhaled, the particles must be able to reach where the exchange of oxygen happens, of the lungs. 

Studies have shown that when exposed to nanotized (small particles) titanium dioxide, rats and mice experience significant lung inflammation and cell mutations. 

Professionals advise you to avoid loose powders and blushes that contain titanium dioxide and to please use caution with well pressed powders since they can potentially become airborne when used.
